Tweens want time with friends more than a themed room. How to choose a venue, keep the guest list sane, and what to run yourself to save money.

By nine or ten, the party is about the social experience — who is there and what they get to do together — far more than decorations. Venue hire earns its cost here by removing setup, cleanup and the risk of twelve bored kids in your lounge room.
Choosing the venue
Match the venue to your child’s actual friend group, not the theme you like:
- Active kids: trampoline park, rock climbing, laser tag, indoor sports centre, bowling.
- Creative kids: pottery studio, art workshop, cooking class.
- Lower-key kids: cinema hire, a games cafe, an escape room for a small group.
Ask three questions before booking: what is the staff-to-child ratio, what exactly is included in the package, and how long do you actually get the space for versus the activity.
Keep the guest list sane
The rough convention of “age plus one” breaks down here — a class of 28 cannot all come. Ten to twelve guests is a good target: big enough to feel like an event, small enough that your child gets time with each friend and the per-head cost stays manageable.
What to run yourself
Most venues will happily sell you a food-and-cake package for a premium. You can usually bring your own cake and sometimes your own food:
- Bring a supermarket cake or a simple homemade one.
- Provide your own lolly bags or skip them — many tweens do not care.
- Do the invitations as a group chat or a shared calendar invite. Paper invitations are largely gone by this age.

The awkward-hour problem
Venue slots are often 90 minutes to two hours. If pick-up is at 4:30pm and parents are not back until 5, have a plan — a nearby park, a quiet corner for the few who are always last, and your phone charged.

A short message to each parent that night, ideally with one good photo of their kid, does more for future invitations than any lolly bag.
