Backyard dinosaur party for ages 3 to 8
A backyard dinosaur party that runs itself — a fossil dig, a volcano, an egg hunt and a run sheet that keeps 15 kids busy for two hours.

Dinosaurs are the rare theme that works across a wide age span, needs almost no character licensing, and suits a backyard perfectly. This plan is built around three activity stations plus a couple of whole-group games.
The three stations
1. The fossil dig
Fill a sandpit, a clam shell or a few large tubs with sand and bury cheap plastic skeletons, “gems” and toy bones. Hand each child a paintbrush and a small shovel. This is the station that buys you the most quiet minutes, so set it up furthest from the house.
2. The volcano
A tray, a mound of sand or dirt, a cup pushed into the middle, then the classic bicarb-soda and vinegar reaction with a drop of red food colouring and a squirt of dish soap. Do a test run the day before so you know how much of each to use. Expect to reset it ten times.
3. Egg decorating
Air-dry clay or papier-mache eggs the kids paint and take home as the party favour. If that is too much, painted rocks work just as well and cost nothing.
Whole-group games
- Dinosaur egg hunt. Hide plastic eggs around the yard with a small treat or a sticker inside. Set a boundary so nobody ends up in the neighbour’s garden.
- Freeze like a fossil. Music plays, kids stomp like dinosaurs, music stops, everyone freezes. Last one moving helps you “discover” the next fossil.

Food and cake
Green is your friend: cucumber “swamp” sticks, kiwi, green grapes. Add “pterodactyl wings” (just chicken drumettes) and fairy bread cut into triangles for spikes. A sheet cake with a plastic dinosaur pushed into green icing is the fastest win — no carving required.
Wet-weather backup
Move the dig and egg decorating onto a covered deck or into the garage. Swap the volcano for a slime-making station on a wipe-clean table, and run the games indoors with a smaller boundary.
